This role involves the data analysis of epiphytes collected from native and mixed woodland for the BIOFOREST project. BIOFOREST is nestled within the larger project – PLANFORBIO (2007-2012) http://www.ucc.ie/en/planforbio/. I am assessing species richness, species assemblages and indicator species enabling me to ultimately make management recommendations. I am also responsible for the sorting, labeling and packaging of epiphyte specimens (bryophytes and lichens) into the Trinity College Herbarium.

I was responsible for all the floristic identification and botanical reports. I also conducted numerous river corridor surveys involving aquatic invertebrate kick sampling & sorting. Some major projects I participated included the EcIA of: river maintenance works on the riparian woodland of the lower River Shannon, Limerick; The effects of Arterial Drainage Maintenance works on SACs & SPAs; The effects of Arterial Drainage Maintenance activities on Alkaline Fens, Cladium Fens, Transition Mires and Whorl Snails–Vertigo angustior, Vertigo geyeri & Vertigo moulinsiana.

I worked on a range of projects including the Audit of Biological data for Mayo County Council which involved sourcing and entering data; The EcIA of the extension of a motorway from Newry to Ballygawley with emphasis on impacts to sensitive habitats and protected mammals. I gained immense experience of Fossitt level 3 habitat mapping while surveying the majority of Co. Dublin south of the M50 for Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

I was subcontracted by this company to survey native woodland in County Mayo for the National Native Woodland Survey on behalf of the NPWS. I inputted all the relevé data from Mayo and some data from Galway woodlands into a Microsoft Access database. I was also contracted by this company for the pilot survey of Semi-Natural Grasslands in North Roscommon – also for the NPWS.

NUI Galway & Galway County Council, Research Assistant, Sept 2006-Apr 2007
For this job, I mapped the townland of Carraroe, County Galway to ‘Fossitt’ habitat level 3. The results were digitized to GIS format using Arc GIS. Evaluation of habitats and habitat restoration was another feature of this survey with appropriate recommendations being suggested.
